Sacristans are specially trained in the preparation of the sanctuary for the celebration of Mass.  They are also trained in the proper methods for purifying and cleaning the Communion bowls,  Chalices, and Cups, all of which are used  as vessels for the precious Body and Blood of our Lord during the Mass.

Sacristans are required to arrive well in advance of the scheduled liturgy to set out the proper vessels and the unconsecrated bread and wine.  They will also ensure the purificators and other incidentals are ready for the scheduled liturgy.   They may also be called upon to prepare the Baptismal area should a Baptism be scheduled at a given Mass.
